Margaret (Peggy) Schlenker, 96, of Kutztown PA, passed away Friday, April 22, 2022. Born in Mahanoy City PA, she was the daughter of the late Arba and Ammon Lesher. She resided in Ephrata PA- before moving to Kutztown PA after she married. Margaret was preceded in death by her three sisters, Irene wife of Donald Luther of Dunellen NJ, Ethel wife of Frank Bolster and Gladys wife of Robert Dando both of Ephrata PA. and her husband Robert R. Schlenker, former owner of Schlenker Motor Company. She was the mother of two daughters, Elizabeth Anne Ely wife of Eric A. Ely who resides in Williamsburg, VA., and Sally Schlenker McCorrison wife of Charles Richard McCorrison who resides in Bethlehem PA, and was the grandmother of four: Ashley Gillard; Ryan Ely; Andrew Ely and Jamison McCorrison, and the great-grandmother of Nuala Harris McCorrison. Growing up Peggy’s favorite Pet was her Parrot Polly who lived for 40 -years and used to sing “Row, Row, Row your boat” daily. And her favorite toy was her stuffed dog “Fido”.
Growing up she loved piano lessons, Shirley Temple movies, and Frank Sinatra records. Peggy was a graduate of Ephrata High School class of 1943 and Kutztown State College class of 1947. She worked as a librarian for two years for the Red Lion School District and also at the Reading Public Library. She met the love of her life in 1949 at her Aunt’s home on Main Street in Kutztown and they were married on May 6, 1950 and honeymooned in New York City. She raised her family at 319 W Main, and later moved to her in law’s home on College Blvd. Peggy enjoyed traveling with her family to South America, Europe, on Cruises, and Bermuda (her favorite island) and especially the Jersey Shore where she spent time in recent summers at her daughter’s cottage in Lavallette. She also traveled to Disney, Hawaii and Arizona with her daughter Sally. Peggy most enjoyed helping to raise her children and grandchildren, and her wish was to be remembered as a good mother and grandmother! She also enjoyed her many cats, board games, shopping, reading, and baking- her specialty was Apple Crisp! She was a member of Grace Church Bethlehem and a 30-year resident in her later years at Saucony Cross Apartments, Kutztown, PA. A Memorial service will be planned for later this Spring.
